Salt Culture

Designed in conjunction with the Logo Design course at Bellevue College, I created a logo and branding for a friend's small home side business in Hawai'i. Shanna produces delicious, nutrition-packed food that is handmade with available local ingredients with a primary focus on naturally fermented pickles and sauerkrauts.

Shanna wanted a logo that wasn't too kitschy with the Hawai'i theme, but that did help identify it as something locally produced. She wanted an identity that was simple, modest, "healthy", and aesthetically pleasing. The name Salt Culture has two meanings. First, it is a reference to Hawai'i, which historically and culturally has used sea salt throughout the ages.  Secondly, it references the act of culturing or fermenting products using salt. At the time, Shanna was living on a ginger flower and ti leaf farm near the Ko'olau mountains near Kaneohe Bay on the island of Oahu. The mountain range ultimately found its way into the logo as the defining silhouette.
